How to choose a suitable toy for the right age? | Knock On Wood Toys

Wooden toys are meant to be fun and educational, but they can also be dangerous if they're not appropriate for your child's age. Here are some tips on choosing the right toy for your child.

A good toy will encourage your child's imagination, creativity and curiosity. It will also help them learn about themselves and others as well as how things work in the world around them.

Not all toys are good for each age. Here is some advice on age-appropriate toys for your child:

Infants

For young children, it's important to choose toys that will help them learn about the world around them. It's also essential to ensure that any toy you buy is non-toxic and won't break into pieces that could harm your baby if swallowed. Toys with batteries should be avoided at this stage since they could be easily swallowed by an infant who doesn't yet have the motor skills needed to handle small pieces. Check labels carefully before buying any new toy for your baby or toddler.

Baby dolls, blocks, puzzles and rattles are ideal for this age group. If you're buying a doll, choose one that makes sounds and has lots of different textures so that it can stimulate visual and tactile senses. Blocks are good because they encourage construction play which helps build fine motor skills. Toys with sounds can help develop language skills by encouraging your baby to talk back to them (and help parents understand what their baby wants). Puzzles are great because they encourage problem-solving skills through trial and error, which is very important in later life when children begin school. Rattles are also good because they help develop hand-eye coordination, which is vital when learning to write later in life.

Toddlers

Toddlers love to play with toys that help them explore their environment and learn new skills, such as counting and sorting. You'll want to choose sturdy toys enough not to break when thrown across a room in frustration (or excitement!), but also lightweight enough that they can be held in one hand while being manipulated by another hand and foot! Toddlers don't have much patience.

Ages 2-3 years: At this age, children have many questions about the world around them, and they begin to form opinions about what they like and don't like. Toys at this age should be open-ended so that toddlers can use their imaginations to create new things. They should also encourage problem-solving skills and creativity. Some examples of toys for this age group include art supplies like crayons, markers and coloured pencils,  blocks, puzzles, dolls, stuffed animals, toy cars, trucks and trains.

Ages 4-6 years

Children this age become more independent thinkers who learn how the world works around them through play. They also begin forming their own opinions about things. Toys for this age group should encourage social interaction with other children by facilitating pretend play and having multiple uses, such as nursery rhyme books that can be read aloud or played with differently depending on what interests your child might have.

Kids this age also love to build things with blocks or Legos®, which helps improve their fine motor skills! And don't forget arts & crafts! Art supplies like crayons, markers, paper plates, old magazines and scissors are always favourites of preschoolers.

The best toys are the ones that encourage your child to use their imagination. The right toys will encourage your child to play and learn. They're fun and make you feel good about what you're purchasing for them. A good toy should inspire creativity and learning.
